Getting physically active with your children is a great way to burn calories and get your heart pumping and your blood moving. But that’s not the only reason why sport is good for children and your family, there’s much more than you might realise on the face of it.
Here are 4 important hidden benefits of exercising with your children:
You form a stronger bond
For most people nowadays, “family time” means going to the cinema, eating pizza or maybe watching TV together. There’s nothing wrong with that every now and again, but it’s not the ideal environment for talking to each other, sharing your day, laughing together, etc. Exercising together, however, is completely different. You are almost guaranteed to talk to each other, especially if you choose an activity where you have to work as a team. This allows you to work together for a common goal, and share the happiness when you achieve it. It’s a fabulous way to form close bonds with the people you love and live with, but who you may sometimes feel you don’t really know anymore.
You create happy memories
Kids love to see their parents, grandparents, aunts, whoever, being silly, playing and generally having fun. They really do, and it’s a hugely important part of their childhood memories. Adults don’t usually realise how important play time is for them, too. When was the last time you totally relaxed and let your inner child have a good play? It’s a welcome rest from being a serious, working grown up, with all the stress and responsibilities that brings, and at the same time you’re creating memories your child (grandchild, nephew/niece, etc.) will treasure someday—memories of times you spent laughing and simply enjoying each other’s company. This is far more precious to them than any games consoles will ever be.
It can establish lifelong healthy habits
Young children and toddlers in particular, can sometimes spend a very long time sat in a buggy, car seat or in front of the television. As well as denying them the opportunity to develop their motor skills, this can also lead to a very sedentary adult life, which, unfortunately, means a greater risk of obesity and illness. But, if kids get into the habit of exercising and regular physical activity, they are much more likely to continue the habit as they get older. You can make lasting changes in your own life, too – it’s never too late to make fitness a central part of your life.
It’s a lot of fun
It really is, for all of you! Kicking a ball around in the garden, walking the dog, putting on some music and dancing around your living room, even tidying up can take on a completely different role.
