Cambia tus habitos

There’s no better time than the start of a New Year to shake up your life and take positive steps to a happier, healthier life.

Here are 11 things you might want to consider promising yourself, starting now. Say it with us, “I will…”:

1. Stop using work, family or friends, etc. as excuses to skip training sessions

Stick to your plans and keep a routine. This will help your body and mind, which will have a positive impact on every aspect of your life.

2. Try to avoid waiting until I’m injured or ill before I see a health specialist

We all know the saying “Prevention is better than the cure”. There’s a good reason for it – it’s very true. So before a minor muscle ache becomes a big problem, see a physiotherapist; before getting sick, go for regular check-ups, etc.

3. Plan my meals and snacks properly

Using fresh, organic ingredients to make healthy alternatives that will stop you from giving in to temptation and reaching for unhealthy options. This is the best way to keep your body healthy and your energy levels high throughout the day.

4. Spend more time and money on action-packed adventures and less on technology and unnecessary luxuries

Studies have shown that travelling and enjoying nature, especially when combined with physical activity, increases happiness levels over a much longer period of time than the quick fix of joy buying a new pair of shoes or computer game will ever do.

5. Give myself a lot more little moments of joy

Sit and watch a beautiful sunset; play with your children; laugh with your partner; enjoy a coffee with a friend; help someone in need…These small moments are what really give meaning to life, and what happy memories are made of.

6. Take much better care of the environment

Now, more than ever, everyone needs to step up and do their bit for the planet. Recycle. Don’t waste water or electricity. Walk or cycle whenever possible. Eat locally grown food, organic if you can. Generate less waste, etc. Several seemingly small actions taken by many people lead to significant results. Everything helps.

7. Do something nice for others

It’s good to remind ourselves just how lucky we are every now and then, to feel gratitude instead of complaining. Helping others is a fantastic way to spend some of your time. Volunteer for some charity work, sponsor a child, the list of possible action is endless. Improving someone else’s life if you are able to is one of the best things you can ever do and is echoed in how good it makes you feel.

8. Get enough sleep

Decent, regular sleep is a must, not a maybe. There is a long list of negative side effects that come from inadequate sleep, and being in a foul mood is only one of them. Reduced concentration, weight gain and even serious health problems such as heart disease have all been linked to not getting enough rest.

9. Let myself say no every now and then

Saying “yes” when you want or need to say “no” is not healthy.

10. Make myself a priority

This isn’t selfish, despite what you may think or be led to feel. Putting our own needs before those of others is absolutely essential if we are to be the best version of ourselves we can be. This will also make you the best partner, parent, friend, etc. you can be. Here’s some food for thought from a quote we like: “If I asked you to name all the things that you love, how long would it take for you to name yourself?”

11. Let go

Of everything that no longer serves you or that is holding you back. This could be emotional; sentiments such as anger, resentment, regret or jealousy. It could also be more tangible – relationships, jobs, friendships, etc. You’ll be amazed at how much lighter and more empowered you feel when once you take back control of your own life.
